Takin’ Care of Business and Working Paid Overtime

November 26, 2006

“About 800 CA-based Siebel employees who held the job title ’software engineer’ or ’senior software engineer’ stand to pocket $27,000 each from the proceeds of Siebel’s $27.5 settlement of an overtime dispute. And while IBM’s 32,000 techies won’t make out quite as well, they’ll still divvy up $65M in OT pay that IBM’s shelling out to settle a federal class action suit.”

Firefox Losing its Way?

November 26, 2006

“NeoSmart Technologies has a recap on Firefox 2.0 and it’s shortcomings. Aside from the technical aspects, the article raises some good questions about the Firefox “community,” it’s future, and what it’s goals are at the end of the day. Their conclusion? Firefox 1.5 was a much better open-source project/community model than 2.0 ever will be, and that “It seems Firefox has lost its way somewhere along the passage to fame.”"

China may forsake gold, but not Friendship

November 26, 2006

LAHORE: Chinese President Hu Jintao has said Sino-Pak friendship will not be affected in the changing global geo-political scenario, citing an adage, “China will prefer to give up gold than friendship” with Pakistan.“There is an old Chinese saying that gold can be scarified but friendship can never be given up,” Hu said while addressing a reception given in his honour by Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi at the Shalamar Gardens on Saturday.

He said though the geo-political situation was rapidly changing at the global level, but Pak-China friendship would not change as it was based on vast interest of the people of both the countries.

“Chinese industrialists and trade organisations prefer to invest in Pakistan. They have invested in various sectors, particularly in motorcycle industry and today China-made motorcycles are running all over Pakistan, especially in the Punjab.”

“The Sino-Pak economic cooperation will benefit the people of both the countries, as it will further strengthen Pak-China friendship,” he said. He added that Pak-China mutual relationship is benefiting both the countries in different sectors, including politics, economy, defence, and at the level of people.

Hu stressed that China and Pakistan should promote friendship through mutual efforts and should make joint struggle for bringing development and prosperity for the people.

“Pakistan is among those countries that stood by China in difficult times and helped it. We cannot forget Pakistan’s role for China over the years. In the past, both Pakistan and China stood by each other during crucial times. Political and economic cooperation between China and Pakistan will be strengthened further. “Over the years both Pakistan and China have become trustworthy friends, as their friendship is time-tested,” he said. He pledged China would stand by Pakistan in all kinds of circumstances.

The Chinese president stated that Pak-China friendship flourished in the 1960s and Lahore played an important role to strengthen it further, which later covered other cities of China and Pakistan.

“The first time I came to Lahore was in 1984. After 22 years I got an opportunity to see this beautiful city once again. Lahore is a famous historical city. If someone wants to know Pakistan, he will have to know Lahore, as here he can find out social and cultural values of Pakistan,” he said and added that Lahore bears testimony to a bright future of Pakistan. He said the Punjab, particularly Lahore, is the important pillar of Pakistan’s economy and industry. He said a famous personality of great philosopher-poet Allama Iqbal was born in a city of the Punjab.

While thanking Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi for the warm welcome, Hu said 1.3 billion people of China were also thankful to Pakistan, particularly to the Lahorites, for giving such a warm welcome.

Earlier in his welcome address, Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi said the 21st century world would have to seek guidance from the ancient Chinese wisdom for solution of its burning issues and disputes. He said China has always upheld the time-honoured principles of international justice and Pakistan has always enjoyed complete support of China on Kashmir and other important issues.

He said Pak-China friendship is a lasting and durable reality and has stood every test of time. He said China has always provided invaluable guidance to Pakistan on important issues.

He recalled that China supported Pakistan at every critical juncture and people of Lahore cannot forget the fact that it helped when the city was attacked 40 years ago. He said friendship between China and Pakistan was not based merely on their proximity or geographical considerations.

The chief minister said China became a beacon of light for the world in the field of international politics and economy as the international markets were glutted with Chinese products.

It was the earnest desire of the Pakistanis to benefit from the charismatic strategy of their lasting friend due to which it has become a model even for the developed nations, he added. He said the Punjab was also been making rapid progress in every sector in accordance with the development vision of President Pervez Musharraf.

He said the Punjab government wanted to establish a special joint economic zone for private investment and it was its earnest desire that our Chinese brethren should take upon the responsibility of management of this zone.

He said he had presented this proposal to the governor of Jiangsu province during his visit to China to which he had agreed in principle. He said Punjab government is willing to provide land for this project free of charge. He expressed the confidence that the federal government will leave no stone unturned towards completion of any project to be executed in the province with the guidance and cooperation of China.

Pervaiz said that in the backdrop of fast-changing international scenario, a large number of Pakistanis want to learn Chinese language. He said the Punjab government is setting up Jiangsu cultural centres in the province for the teaching of Chinese language and the government will also provide scholarships to the students. He stressed upon the need for exchange of maximum number of cultural, literary, educational and journalist delegations between Punjab and Jiangsu.

APP adds: The Chinese president was accorded a red-carpet welcome when he arrived on a two-day visit in the provincial capital on Saturday.

Upon his arrival at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, he was greeted by the Governor Khalid Maqbool, Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi while the spouse of Chinese president was welcomed by Rubina Khalid, the wife of the governor.

Hu was introduced to a long reception line comprising members of the Punjab cabinet, high-ranking civil and military officials besides Chinese working in various projects in Pakistan.

The provincial capital, especially the major roads, were giving a festive look as these have been tastefully decorated with flags of Pakistan and China besides banners inscribed with welcome slogans and portraits of Chinese and Pakistani leaders.

On Sunday, President Hu will visit the Chinese home appliances manufacturing firm, Haier at Manga Mandi.

Getting Contacts into Contacts the Fastest Way Possible

November 26, 2006

Do you have stacks of business cards and not enough time to enter them into your contact manager?

If so, you might want to have the Internet come to your rescue in the form of “www.egrabber.com”. You’ve probably heard about card scanners, but this site offers a something beyond scanners. If you are working with any sort of database of leads – just try their ListGrabber, which will scoop up the entire database (hundreds or even thousands of contacts) and land them neatly and tidily into your Outlook, ACT! or any other top-notch contact manager. Talk about time savings!!

The Other Guys’ Web Sites have Gold

November 26, 2006

It’s a human trait to think that we learn the most from our own discipline. If we’re an insurance agent, then we learn the most by reading insurance news and information. If we’re in journalism, we learn the most by reading about journalism. Not always true – as the Internet can quickly teach us.

When we speak to business audiences we often use SpeakerNet News (www.speakernetnews.com) as an example of an Internet resource that is far too valuable to be left just to speakers.

By that we mean that virtually any entrepreneur or business can benefit from it. Why would SpeakerNet News be of use to an insurance agent or a small business owner or even a corporate employee? Well think about it, these days most business professionals will be giving a speech or presentation for one reason or another. In addition, SpeakerNet news also has incredible section called “Compilations,” such as the list of “Free or Cheap Meeting Rooms,” something almost everyone is looking for.

A similar site is the Poynter Institute (www.poynter.org), a school for journalists in St. Petersburg, Florida. This site is far too valuable to be left just to journalists. Think about it, journalists must be able to find accurate information quickly, so there is a section of the web site devoted to “Web Tips.” Journalists, like speakers, also impart information to their audience (readers) and they face the same challenges that speakers face – such as ethical dilemmas and content creation. Look under “Columns” for regular features like “Talk about Ethics,” “Writing Tools” and “Journalism with a Difference.” That last column is described as “New, fresh and alternative ways to encourage and enhance journalistic storytelling from different perspectives.” Sound like something any of us could use? And, both SpeakerNet and Poynter offer stellar weekly newsletters. If you want to excel in your business, no matter what it is, learn from the best of other professions, not just your own.

Want one more? If you are in sales (and who isn’t these days?) would you think that the newsletter for the National Association of Wholesale-Distributors at www.naw.org would have that much to offer you? Well, Pat Foltz, from Fred Pryor Seminars, swears by it – and she’s not a wholesale-distributor! They have a weekly newsletter called “Spotlight on Sales,” which has topic headings like “Best Practices,” “Management,” “Customer Relations,” “Training and Presentations,” and more.  (To sign up for it, look on the left side of the NAW site for the link to “NAW Smartbrief”)

Advertise Yourself – The Flat World Way

November 26, 2006

Thomas Friedman’s bestselling book, The World is Flat, continues to sit high atop the New York Times Bestseller List – and has for the past 71 weeks. That’s not too surprising when you realize (as thousands more do each week) that his book explains how technology and the Internet are empowering small companies to compete with, and even surpass, their bigger rivals.

But there are two Flat Worlds out there, folks. The first is Friedman’s “Flat World of Competition.” The second is the much seedier and less well documented “Flat World of Hucksterism.”

Somehow, technology seems to breed hype and hucksterism. When it comes to the Internet you know hucksterism all too well – “We’ll Boost Your Web Site to Number 1 on Every Google Search” “1001 Ways Google Adwords will Make You Rich”“I Made $2,765, 230 in 2 Days, and You Can Too!” This kind of hogwash and horsefadoodle entraps thousands of poor souls every day. You may well know someone who shelled out their life savings in pursuit of instant Internet fortune (or you may be that person). The sad truth is that most of the time the only person getting rich is the person hawking the dream. Don’t believe me? Just go to www.gurudaq.com if you’d like to travel through the world of the Internet carnival barker. This site, created by John Sikora, gathers hundreds of “Internet marketers” in one place, ranking them like the NASDAQ ranks companies and comparing their methods. I think you’ll be surprised and I think you’ll agree it’s eye-opening to see how similar (and often cynical) the techniques of Internet sales exploitation really are.

One way to test if someone is trying to “sell you” is to do a simple test we call the “Elbow Grease Test.” Just ask yourself – “are they selling me something that doesn’t involve me?” Weight loss hucksters have done this for years. In many weight loss programs you are sold an “easy” weight loss system and the results are always the same – they get rich and you stay fat. It’s the same with technology. If you are offered first place ranking on Google without any elbow grease on your part – well, just beware. If, however, your upcoming fortune comes with some considerable effort on your part, well then, maybe, you’ll want to keep listening. This “Elbow Grease Hucksterism” test is an almost foolproof way to separate the hustlers’ promises from the legitimate products.

One example of a company that passes our test is ARA Content (www.aracontent.com) – a company that delivers true value for a fair price. ARA Content could not have existed just 15 years ago, but today they offer a way to get your articles published in hundreds of newspapers around the country – at a fraction of the cost of advertising in those same newspapers. ARA Content is so good we feature them in our seminar, Hidden Sales Treasure of the Internet.

I first learned about ARA Content when a news alert for the “invisible web” landed in my e-mail inbox. This particular article from the Lancaster, Pennsylvania newspaper wasn’t quite a news story and it wasn’t really a press release. It was something else I couldn’t quite figure out. Checking more closely, I could find no byline – just these words at the end of the article: “Copyright © 2005, ARA Content.”

When I read the article again I noticed something else. Although the article was informative, it also appeared to include an (ahem) “advertisement” for the James J. Hill Library in St. Paul, Minnesota. Now, the folks at the Hill Library offer a search service and a web site (www.jjhill.org) that is one of the crown jewels of the Internet (and another example of the flat world of value – and a service that passes our hucksterism test with flying colors).

But, why had a Pennsylvania newspaper published an article that was such a great promotional piece for the James J. Hill Business Library? Who wrote it? And what the heck was ARA Content?

By now you probably know that doing a simple Internet search for “ARA Content” will lead you to www.aracontent.com. Let’s talk about what makes this site a true Hidden Sales Treasure of the Internet. The main benefit ARA Content provides to businesses both small and large is the chance to promote their own business or new product by writing articles that may be featured on the news web sites and real “hand-held” paper editions of newspapers around the country.

How do they do this? Newspapers often need stories to fit a particular section, topic or even an empty space. With reduced reporting staffs these days they often feature content written by other experts or specialists. Newspapers will do this because for them it’s easy and it’s free. ARA Content is the broker for such articles to something like 50 of the 100 top circulation newspapers in America – such as the Los Angeles Times, the Kansas City Star and the Star-Ledger in New Jersey.

So, if the Los Angeles Times doesn’t have to pay for these articles, how does ARA Content make money? Time for the bad news now – and welcome back to the world of reality, boys and girls. If you are going to have ARA Content feature your articles in such newspapers you’ll have to pay for their services (I know, the world just isn’t fair). However, they will be completely up-front with you about whether or not your company should even buy their product.

And, you’ll have to invest some considerable elbow grease before you should even consider their service. You’ll have to make sure you have a product or service that is not only different, but newsworthy. And you’ll have to write the articles, making them informational and not just a press release (although their editors will help or even write the content for you if you don’t write that well). ARA is not selling you easy money. What they are selling (at a fair price) is one of the craftiest, sanest and thriftiest ways to promote your business, new product, or special expertise that has ever been invented.

Big deal,” you say, “I’ve tried those article sites and they never get me any business. It’s a waste of time and money.” ARAContent is definitely not like those sites. Those sites are a perfect example of the Flat World of Hucksterism. ARA Content, however, is an example of Thomas Friedman’s Flat World – the world that is revolutionizing the competitive marketplace. The value of being published as an ARA Content article is what they call “ad dollar equivalency.” The short explanation of ad dollar equivalency is what it would have cost you to place an ad for the same space as your article. What would it cost you to place an equivalent ad in the Los Angeles Times? The cost of your ARA article is peanuts compared to the cost of “equivalent” ads.

Yes, it will take work (and money) on your part to be featured in these newspapers, so ARA passes our “hucksterism” test with flying colors. Start your work by going on their site and reading some of the articles in categories similar to yours. Then, begin the work of deciding if you have something that is different enough and newsworthy enough to be picked up by newspaper editors.

What kinds of things might you write about that would get your company more attention? Here are some of the approaches we saw when we visited their site:

• Products – promote your new invention, game, or even groups of products (CompUSA wrote an article about hand-held gadgets – and many smaller companies wrote of their new inventions)
• Contest or Fund Drive – an association fundraising for a new program to send students to study in foreign countries or a company sponsoring a contest around a newsworthy topic
• Service or Expertise – newsworthy service or specialty
• Differentiation – almost any thing that sets your company, product, or event apart is fair game

Let’s be clear here. ARA’s services pass our hucksterism test, but their service is not for everyone. You might say that ARA is for the “big dogs.” By that I don’t mean mega-corporations, but in the context of the NSA convention, likely ARA customers might be the National Speakers’ Association itself, some of the bigger speakers’ bureaus and some of the more established, newsworthy and differentiated speakers and authors. The keys are a newsworthy hook and a differentiated product, book or service.

Be Careful Who You Hire to Optimize Your Web Site

November 26, 2006

I got our friend Curtis Cloutier from Webolutions (www.webolutions.com) to read our previous post called “Advertise Yourself – the Flat World Way.” I then called him up and interviewed him about SEO (that’s “Search Engine Optimization” which translates to “I want my web site to come up first when people do a Google search“) and Google Adwords (which are those little text ads on the right side of the screen). Everyone we meet these days wants their web site to be #1 on Google searches. Uh-huh. Curtis is a lot more politic than I am, but he and his company know a Google’s worth of stuff about both SEO and Adwords.

Curtis has a way of cutting right to the chase – and using better analogies than I could ever come up with. I asked him about all those offers I’ve been getting offering to teach me SEO and Adwords in a weekend workshop, one-day workshop or even, I kid you not, one that just came in my mail which said they would teach me everything in just a 3-hour, half-day workshop!

Curtis offered, “These skills are complicated, Michael. Many companies employ full-time employees and spend thousands of dollars just to keep themselves up-to-date on both. It’s a little like being a carpenter. Could you go to a one-day workshop and then build a house?” I love his carpenter analogy because a really good analogy means I don’t have to write anymore – I can shut up – because we get it.

He also offers a great test that anyone can use anywhere (not just Denver – Webolutions is in Denver) to help pick a web design company that also offers top search engine placement. “Just do a Google search in your city for “web design Dallas,” or “web design Baltimore,” for instance.” We took him up on it for Denver – and Googled “web design denver” – and the first result was, yeah, you guessed it, Webolutions. “If a company is offering to get your web site optimized to come up high in search engine results, they had better be able to do it for themselves,” he said. Try that test on your web company! And definitely, try it next time you hire someone new.

Incidentally, remember those folks who want to teach you how to optimize your own web site – in a jiffy? A couple things to remember. First, bigger companies employ squadrons of folks just to do this little task of web site optimization. Beyond that, Google is working day and night to counter the scammy tips and tricks of the folks teaching you how get your site artificially pumped up to #1. There are legitimate ways to optimize your site – but do you want to be an expert in that – or an expert in your own business?

By way of full disclosure, Curtis and Webolutions do not design any of the Golden Compass or Hidden Treasures web sites or blogs (kinda wish he did!). He is, however, a friend who works for an honest company in a category that is full of thieves, scoundrels and pretenders – and he knows a whole lot about getting your web site to #1.

Is Internet Information Worth Paying For?

November 26, 2006

Coach Karen called us up a couple of days ago. She has a client who wants to find some specific information and Karen figured we might help. And then she said the magic words, “And she doesn’t want to pay for it.”

I’m writing this post while attending Web Search University in Washington, D.C. Yes, we admit we don’t know it all, and call us old fashioned, but we still believe in continuous learning. When it comes to searching the Internet, it’s always about continuous learning.

Most of the sessions at this conference have to do in one way or another with online business resources, and often specifically address the question of pay vs. free.

Much of the Internet is off-limits. That’s because you have to pay a fee or purchase a membership to get to some of the best business information. Kind of like a private country club, really. Google and Yahoo are the public golf courses. The business pay sites are the private clubs.

The problem is that entrepreneurs and small business owners seldom have the budgets to play the private courses. So Coach Karen’s client is not chintzy, she’s just needs to be sure that what she spends her money on gives her a good return on her investment.

By the way, Coach Karen is really Karen Van Cleve, a friend of ours, and a great business coach who is a certified by the Anthony Robbins coaching organization. You can find her (and hire her) at www.karenvancleve.com.

The amount of free business information online staggers the imagination. Still, that gargantuan amount remains only a fraction of the total. And the problem is that much of what is hidden behind the gatekeepers and the tollbooths of the private clubs is crucial to starting and running a business these days.

So, what is Coach Karen’s client to do? Let’s assume that she has determined that the information she is seeking is not available from the general search engines. Here are just a few examples of the many other ways she could find information for free:

Google Answers – Karen’s client could ask Google her question, but not in the traditional way. She would need to go to answers.google.com – not google.com. At Google Answers, she’ll type in her question, offer a fair price ($2.50 being the minimum) and send it off to Google’s squad of 250 researchers. Or, she could do a search of the Google Answers database to see if someone else has already asked her question. She’d look for the search box labeled “Search Google Answers for” on the Google Answers home page. If someone has already asked (and answered) a question like hers, she won’t have to spend a cent!

Google Scholar – This is a kind of quick run at scholarly information. Google offers a way to access academic papers and studies at scholar.google.com.

Free Library Resources – Karen’s client most likely has a public library card. What she probably doesn’t realize is what a valuable business tool that card is for her. It allows her access to databases and information that would cost her far more than the taxes she pays to support her local library. And, she can get to this information from the comfort of her own computer, in the comfort of her own home. She will need to follow all rules and regulations of the library road.

Call the Reference Librarian – Or, she could pick up the phone and call the business reference desk at her local library and ask them for the answers she is seeking. Is this a great country, or what? No, I am not kidding, you need to try this at home, children.

There are many other ways to get to free information, but the fact remains that there are times when shelling out will be the only way to get the information you need. These days, almost every business is about expertise. Your customers demand expertise from you, your lead generation process requires it and your competition makes it mandatory (or they will rip your little operation into Chiclets).

But, who you gonna’ call? There are a zillion information sites and services, specializing in everything from sales leads, to news retrieval, to competitive intelligence, and on and on. Only one of them, in our opinion, offers a range of spectacular business resources aimed specifically at the small business owner for an indecently low price.

Or, to put it another way and to paraphrase a popular television ad: “Looking for the definition of affiliate marketing? Call Google. Looking for the telephone number for a local dentist? Call Anywho. For everything else there’s James J. Hill Business Reference Library.”

You’ll find the online version of this oldest honorable business profession at www.jjhill.org. James J. Hill members have access to a wide variety business news and information databases that, purchased individually, would cost many times the $50 monthly fee for Premium membership. Your $50 gets you into Dun & Bradstreet’s Million Dollar Database, EBSCO Business Source Corporate, ABI/Inform, Newsbank, ProQuest and others.

These databases alone make the investment a steal for a small business owner – but you also have those Hill graduate-degreed researchers at your beck and call. Call, e-mail or instant message your questions to them for no additional charge – and they’ll lead you to the best answers. Lots of bigger companies don’t even have that kind of information retrieval support!

Here’s a recent example of the Hill library’s expertise. Our search for “job stress” “interior designers” was not yielding enough good results. One of the databases included with a Hill subscription is Business Source Premier, which is searched through EBSCO Host. It includes a journal called “Work and Stress” – and the back issues of this journal are searchable. Just ask Google if it can do that!

There is a ton of information available on the Internet for free. There are also hundreds of ways to pay for quality business information. But, there’s only one James J. Hill Business Reference Library (probably time once again, folks, to let you know that we do not receive payment from any of the sites or services mentioned in our blogs or workshops).

So, it comes down to this. Sometimes Karen’s client won’t have to pay at all. Other times, she won’t have to pay much. Today, she has great business information at her fingertips – more by far than the best professional library researchers had just 10 or 15 years ago – she just needs to take a little time to learn where and how to find it. That’s certainly a business investment worth making.
